Well if we fast forward 30 years to look at the Internet in 1999 this is the kind of topological picture you would see, showing the linkages among the various networks, there about a quarter of a million networks on the Internet today, they are interconnected in very complex ways.
This chart is colourful, gives you a sense of density, gives you a sense of high conductivity and apart from that it doesn't tell you a whole lot except that it's a really big system now.
If we look at the distribution of users on the network, first of all it's clear that there's ever a billion but it's also clear that that its only about 17% of the world population, so in spite of the fact that we have a billion Internet users we have 5.5 billion more to go, which is one of the reasons why Google wants a Chief Internet evangelist that evangelist wants to get more Internet built and I'm pleased to say that in Australia, companies like Pipe Networks is trying to make increased amount of Internet availability reality, so have a long ways to go.
Asia today, has the largest single group of Internet users, almost 400 million and it's not surprising because if you include China and India and Indonesia and Malaysia and so on under the rubric Asia, you get a very big population over 56% of the world’s population would fall into that category.
Australia is part of the Oceania collection. Pacific Islands, New Zealand and so on and you represent a pretty significant part of Internet community, some 70% of the Australian population is reported to be online.
Not all of that 70% has broadband access but I'm sure that will change over time it’s a smaller about 10% of the 14 million. These are 2004 statistics.
One of the things that is important to understand about the Internet is that its architecture was driven in part by a desire to make it future proof.
